Case Statements
How the case statement evolved for Stepping Stones. the women's program at House of Hope.
Here is an algorithm for locating case statements of an organizations in a particular field. Go to the Google advanced search page. For "with the exact phrase," enter "spotlight". For "return results from the site or domain," enter "http://www.fdncenter.org/". Then for "with at least one of the words," enter your subject area, such as "addiction" or "homelessness". You will need to experiment until this works for you. Following these instructions will let you find a large number of case statements.
Here is the draft text that Jay initiated. Here is the text as revised by public relations. And here is the same revised text with Jay's suggestions. Here is the artist's rendering, which looks nothing like Jay's original text.
Prospect Research
Rules and Regs
You come to class, arriving on time and staying until the end. Excuses are cheerfully granted for organ transplants (donating or receiving). Other excuses will be greeted with skepticism.
Every week I make up one or more assignments for the next week and post them to this Web page. Homework that I receive on time will be graded HP, P, Px, P>, Ux, U>, or U .
You can expect a short quiz at the start of each class, to see if (a) you have turned up on time and (b) you were present and conscious at the previous class.
The principal reason for disappointing grades is failure to show up on time for every class and remain until the end. I call it "volunteering to fail." Turning in homework late is another huge mistake.

I cannot pin my doctor down to a firm date when he will hospitalize me. As soon
as I know, I'll advise you.

There will be no need for me to cancel any class for my trip to the hospital.

HW due on 2007-01-27
Go into the FAU online library and surf to the Opposing
Viewpoints Resource Center.
(Unless you are on an FAU campus, you will need to know the number of your
Owl card.)
Now, select one the the following propositions (or make your own and write it down).
This assignment only works if you really, truly believe in
your proposition that you write.
So give careful thought to what your mind and heart tell you.
Now go into OVRC and find an article that contradicts your
proposition,
one that affects you so strongly emotionally that you cannot believe any author
could be so wrongheaded.
Write a 100 to 150 description of how you feel. Angry? Sad? What?

There will be no class this Saturday, 2007-01-27. I need

Select a local company. Go
to their Web site and find a page that describes what
nonprofits they already support. Make a screenshot and turn it in.
Select a local bank branch
manager. Discover their home address. Use the newspaper’s real estate section
to estimate the value of their home.
Use salary.com to estimate their salary.

Here is HW due on 2007-02-17
1. Use GrantSelect to find a foundation that has funded a
program in Boca Raton.
Print the foundation search results.
2. Find the address of the Junior League of Boca Raton (where you may consult
the Foundation Center's database).
Generate a map that shows direction from FAU to JLBR.
Also, read the first few chapters of
Black Sheep Fundraising, if you have not yet done so.
Homework on arguments

Consult chapter two and
especially page 21 of the book we discussed on Saturday.
Here are the Web sites of
several charities that in my opinion might be rewritten to emphasize a different
facet of the problem they describe. Following the precepts of page 21 of the
book, how would you switch the topic/facet? That is, for instance, would you
switch the discussion from “Progress if unattended to” to “Peril to
others”, for instance? Justify your change with two or three sentences (or
more, if you are carried away)..
