Case Statements

How the case statement evolved for Stepping Stones. the women's program at House of Hope.

Here is an algorithm for locating case statements of an organizations in a particular field. Go to the Google advanced search page. For "with the exact phrase," enter "spotlight". For "return results from the site or domain," enter "http://www.fdncenter.org/". Then for "with at least one of the words," enter your subject area, such as "addiction" or "homelessness". You will need to experiment until this works for you. Following these instructions  will let you find a large number of case statements.

Rules and Regs.

You come to class, arriving on time and staying until the end. Excuses are cheerfully granted for organ transplants (donating or receiving). Other excuses will be greeted with skepticism.

Every week I make up one or more assignments for the next week and post them to this Web page. Homework that I receive on time will be graded A, C, or F. Late HW will be graded C or F.

You can expect a short quiz at the start of each class, to see if (a) you have turned up on time and (b) you were present and conscious at the previous class.

The principal reason for disappointing grades is failure to show up on time for every class and remain until the end. I call it "volunteering to fail." Turning in homework late is another huge mistake.

Students and faculty should have an FAU email account, if they don’t they may come over to ly-215 in the library where we are currently assisting students to get their accounts activated.  With the account students would then log in to the computer.

E.g.      Username: Greg
            Password: Userspasswordhere
            Domain:    FAU

If for any reason the user does not have their account created in time for class there is a backup account

            Username: SO276
Password:  No Password (do not put anything)
            Domain:     IRM

This HW is due at the start of class on Saturday 3 September 2005. It is intended to be quickly and easily done and submitted on a single sheet. (Please put your name in the upper right hand corner.)

Review  (http://www.malwarwick.com/letters-chap1.html) Then read the following email that I received last Thursday morning. Tell me which of Mal Warwick’s reasons for making a donation appear in this email. (This course is mainly about face to face fundraising. But this email is too good to ignore.)

“Dear Friends,

”We are in an emergency mode here at The Cooperative Feeding Program. Hurricane Katrina has not even hit land yet but she is already causing pain and panic amongst our clients.

”It's barely 10am on Thursday morning and we are already serving a huge number of hot breakfasts - our homeless clients are subdued and scared. They do not have a designated safe room. They are going back for seconds and some of them even asking for a ziplock bag to take some food with them.

”The shelves of our Emergency Pantry are almost empty despite the fact that we purchased two huge bins of food just Tuesday afternoon. There were just five bottles of water left on the shelf a few minutes ago and at least 12 families crowded into our pantry entrance escaping the now driving rain waiting for a bag of food.

”WE NEED YOUR HELP - NOW. Our window of opportunity to purchase food today is about 8 more hours. We already have one driver going out to purchase from Save-A-Lot. We will probably spend several thousand dollars in food just today as families who have no food in their homes are flocking here. Many people who literally live hand-to-mouth will probably miss getting their Friday paychecks because of the storm.

”PLEASE click on http://www.justgiving.com/pfp/KatrinaEmergency and help us.

”The line of already soaked hungry Broward County residents waiting for food weaves its way around the cafeteria as we try and keep them dry. Our five volunteers from Plantation United Methodist Church are working double time, scooping the sizzling macaroni and cheese onto plates and doubling up with the hot steamed veggies.

”Marlene, our head of client services, has been rushing to photocopy a map of the emergency shelters available to flood victims or the homeless. "How are we supposed to get there?", laments Lenny, a 50 year old man with a cast on his leg as he peers at the driving rain through the window. The Cooperative Feeding Program has distributed hundreds of bus passes this week in preparation for the storm - we do not have anymore.

”We failed in our recent attempt to get $10,000 in emergency food rations (MREs) for storm supplements from local officials. We could have used them right now. So, we will do what we can. We will act quickly to find food after the storm.

”We will see how the hurricane progresses and we will stay open as long as is safe or until the food runs out. I am so proud of my staff and the tremendous efforts they are making despite being worried about their own families. PLEASE HELP US, even with a few dollars to get a few cans of food. Click on http://www.justgiving.com/pfp/KatrinaEmergency

”I need to start thinking about staff safety and getting all of them home - and thank God we have a home to go to. THANK YOU for helping - every little bit helps. Please check our website www.FeedingBroward.org for updates as we are able to do them.

”Please take care and stay safe.

Ms. Vaz sent us this item:

"This Association of Fundraising Professionals item was sent to you by avaz2@fau.edu:
"Hi, Dr. Mendell.  As some of the students in Saturday's class had questions about ethics in fundraising, I recalled this information from the Association of Fundraising Professionals and their code of ethics.  Whether you subscribe to their mantra or not, these ethics are highly respected and followed today.  Perhaps you could pass this along to the students for reference.  See you Saturday!  Audra Vaz.

Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of Professional Practice The foundation of philanthropy is ethical fundraising, and a key mission of AFP is to advance and foster the highest ethical standards through its Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of Professional Practice<

I found this interesting material on persuasion

Short article by Boeree (http://www.ship.edu/~cgboeree/persuasion.html )
Changing Minds (http://changingminds.org/index.htm) -- 1800 pages, if you print all of it.

Posted on 2005-09-04

The link to "power brokers of Palm Beach county" has been remove3d from the Internet. Oddly, the corresponding list for Broward remains accessible through Google (but I'm going to make you wait for a while before I link to it.

Here is a HW due next Saturday, 2005-09-10.

Do not wait until the last minute to do this, especially if you do not have an Owl card, since if you do not have a card, you are going to have to visit an FAU campus to use the library's online databases. (Whoops! Check with the Web page of your county library system, to see if your county, to see if they will provide the access that you need.) So figure out ASAP how to consult the online archives of your county's library.

1. Decide which newspaper's archives you plan to use. In Broward, you can use the Herald, the Sun-Sentinel, or the Post. In Palm Beach, use the Sun -Sentinel or the Post or whatever paper covers the northern part of your county. Farther north, figure this out for yourself.

2. Now you will need to gain access to that newspaper's archives, through www.fau.edu/library/ or your local library. If you are using the FAU online electronic collection, you will need your Owl card and you will have to configure a proxy server (as explained and instructed on the Web site). If you are using the electronic collection of your county library, you will need a library card.

3. Search in the newspaper using such terms as "richest," "wealthiest," "influential," and "power broker," until you have located at least three persons you would like to add to the board of directors of your real or imaginary nonprofit. Print an article describing each one of the three.

4. Now for each one of the three, give me one or two paragraphs about how you would arrange to be introduced to him or her.

The subject of HW due on 2005-09-17 is dressing for fundraising. (Hint: the WWW is loaded with articles on how to dress for a job interview, which is about the same as dressing for fundraising.)

Let’s say you have an appointment with a banker.

Part One of the HW. How will you dress?

There are three ways you can answer the question above. (1) You can give a fairly detailed written head-to-toe description; or (2) Your can have a head to toes photo taken .jpg format only) and email it to me by 12 noon on Friday so I may add it to the Web page (without your name); or (3) You can come to class dressed appropriately (one day only, not all semester).

Part Two of the HW. How low can you go?

Assume that you intend to bring your guy or gal assistant with you to the meeting with the prospect. Since he or she is grossly underpaid, you are going to pay this assistant out of petty cash and send him or her to a thrift store.   How much should you allocate? Please give an itemized breakdown. If you do not have time to visit a thrift store, take a guess, and we’ll compare your guess with others in the class.

To reach Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center (http://www.galenet.com.ezproxy.fau.edu/servlet/OVRC?locID=gale15691&finalAuth=true) from home,  use your Owl card and the proxy server within http://www.fau.edu/library/

Please skim the list on  http://changingminds.org/explanations/needs/needs.htm#Individual .

Here is HW for 2005-09-24. Suppose you decide to increase your connections with the part of the community that is not dedicated to government and nonprofits. You decide to attend one evening or weekend   every week. This may be a cocktail party or any other kind of social event, or a lecture preceded or followed by a social event. Many such events are listed on the Web. What I need you to do, please, is to give me the Web addresses of three organizations that list suitable events. Give me a printouts, too, of the Web-based events calendar.

Here is a HW for 2005-10-01. Go to the Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center (http://www.galenet.com.ezproxy.fau.edu/servlet/OVRC?locID=gale15691&finalAuth=true) and look for one article that argues for and one against the proposition that teenage women are able to make important life decisions. There is no HW due for next Saturday.

Posted 2005-10-10.

This is HW for 2005-10-15. It should take ten minutes of thinking and ten minutes of writing. What you write is a story that you can tell in class in thirty to ninety seconds. We will read these stories in class.

Please write a story. There should be a hero (a central character, man or woman) who is confronted by a great challenge. There should be a helper. The hero overcomes his or her own problem with the assistance of the helper.

It's that simple. We will read and improve the stories in class.

After you have written the story, please read http://www.mwp.com/books/writing/journal-more.php4

This would be a good time for you to jot down the FAU hurricane hotline, 954.236-1800 or 561.297-2020..

Posted 2005-10-19 at 4:30 p. m.

I might not wait for FAU to cancel Saturday classes this week. If I decide to cancel this Saturday's class, I'll ask the office to email each of you at your FAU email address or phone you. To be safe, you should also check this Web page now and then. I might make up my mind by 5 p. m. on Thursday. If you fear for your life and want to leave South Florida without delay, do so, and I'll just have to accept your decision.

The address of that free book on writing sales letters is http://www.sherus.com/business/copywriting/ ,a $24.95 value, absolutely free, as the advertising copywriters would say.

After sleeping two nights on the floor of the Monarch H. S. hurricane shelter and two nights in the pitch dark of our home in Coral Springs , my wife and I have evacuated to Jacksonville . We plan to return on Monday, for me to meet my Tuesday morning class.

If you want to be sure that I will show up in time for class on Tuesday, 1 November 2005, do not hesitate to call me on 954.895-6364.

Posted 2005-11-02

I intend to resume class SAturday. But it would be a very good idea to check with the FAU page on the Web, check with this page, check your FAU email, and even call me at home (954.597-0574) or on my cell phone (954.895-6364) in case anything comes up for you or me, such as a visit from an insurance adjuster or FEMA inspector.

I'm planning a good, useful class, but I certainly am not going to quiz you this Saturday. And so far as submitting HW from before Wilma, you can do that when you see me.

One of the best ways to find information on some angle of fundraising or grantwriting is to search within the Web page of one of these sites: the Foundation Center http://fdncenter.org, the Grantsmanship Center, Inc. http://tgci.com, and Idealist http://nonprofits.org. An effective way to do the searching is to use http://google.com to do your searching.

You can select a topic "your topic" and search via http://google.com with the syntax.
"your topic" site:tgci.com/magazine
"your topic" site:fdncenter.org
or
"your topic" site:nonprofits.org "idealist faq"

I am interested in a having a discussion this coming Saturday, 19 November 2005, of the Ask, the instant when ou stop making chit-chat, building rapport, and assessing the prospect's needs and when you proceed to asking for a major gift.

See what you advice you can find in Foundation Center, Grantsmanship Center, or Idealist about doing the Ask. Bring at least one article to class. Expect to be called up to dicuss your chosen article.
