One of my stories

Public Voices thought this story, "The Third Sector," was too lurid. So I let Circuit Traces have the story.

Here are some rules you must study and follow . . .

Attendance.

This is not a distance learning course. You do not get to fax or mail in your work or send it by email.. You show up alert and on time and stay until the end. I am sick of having to deal with fuddled students who miss explanations and instructions because they wandered in late or did not show up at all.

If you come up to me and say, "I have got to skip class next week to [insert your excuse here]," and I reply, "Okay," this does not mean I have excused you. It just means I have decided not to abuse you at the moment, since I can do so in the privacy of my home when I write the grade sheet.

If I promise you an excused absence, get it in writing or it doesn’t count as promised. (By the way, I have never given an excuse in writing.)

I will make an accommodations for a religious holidays, if you notify me in advance and we work on a plan for what you will miss.

Graded material

You will turn in a diary each week that reflects your involvement and progress. It will be graded High Pass (100), Pass (75), Unsatisfactory (50), or, rarely, Highly Unsatisfactory (0). There is a penalty for turning in the material late.

You can expect a short quiz at the start of each class, to see if (a) you have turned up on time and (b) you were conscious at the previous class.

The principal reason for disappointing grades is failure to show up on time for every class and remain until the end. I call it "volunteering to fail."

The Web page for the course.

Near the beginning of the course, I’ll give you an address for the course Web page. If I have any messages for the class and non-confidential messages for individual students, I’ll post them to the Web page, near the bottom. Checking the page every week is not optional.

E-mail.

In the subject line of any e-mail you send me, you must state "I am your student this term in PAD 6061," or I may mistake your message for junk mail or a virus. Also, be sure that your user ID for e-mail reveals your name, not some wacko ID like "Queen of the Night," or "Gonzo Websurfer."

Posted 2004-08-28  Here are some student diaries from last year (http://gollygrantsonline.com/download/vcm-papers-031022.pdf)

Posted 2004-09-08 Hurricane Ivan is possibly headed toward Florida. You may therefore ask if there will be a class on Saturday 2004-09-11. The answer is no.

Wednesday September 8, 12 p.m.

Due to continued power outages on FAU campuses, all campuses (Boca Raton, Davie, Ft. Lauderdale, Dania Beach, Jupiter and Pt. St. Lucie) remain closed. This includes Henderson and Slattery schools.

All faculty and staff are expected to report to work Friday, September 10 at 9 a.m. The campuses will remain closed to students until further notice, with classes cancelled through Sunday.

All special events scheduled on FAU’s campuses through the weekend are cancelled.

Please continue to visit www.fau.edu or call 561-297-2020 for further updates.

Optionally, read 1984 by Orwell.

Added 2004-09-12

Did you know that FAU has been notifying everyone of campus status by using their official FAU email? So the next time there is a hurricane coming, be sure to check your account names yourname@fau.edu.

When you complete your daily session in StoryWeaver, use
"file--> save as" to save your session. For instance, consider "040919 0800.csn," for the session concluded on 2004 September 19 at 8:00 a. m.  (The "csn" extension is, of course, set by the program.)

You can select any location on your hard drive for the saved file, but I think the default location is the folder called "My Documents." I strongly recommend that you then copy the file to a floppy disk, or send it to a friend as email that they cab save on their computer.

If you want to read some of  the short fiction that I mentioned in class, here are links:

As we have missed two classes, we will have to meet at least once on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, or some evening (not a Wednesday). So please bring your appointment books to class.

I received this memo tonight.

"PLEASE NOTE:  As you are aware, curfews imposed due to Hurricane Jeanne are in effect through much of our service region. In an effort to
accommodate students and faculty who are involved in evening classes
and staff who may required to work evening hours, the FAU Police
Department has prepared a "Curfew Exemption Request" that can be
provided for any student, faculty or staff who meet this criteria. The
forms should be distributed to students by the faculty conducting the
class and can be presented along with an appropriate FAU form of
identification.

"The exemption request will be made available to faculty in two ways.
The forms will be available for faculty to pick up at the FAU Police
Department. In addition, the form is accessible via the following link:
http://www.fau.edu/announcement/CurfewExemption.pdf.  Faculty are
encouraged to print the form and have copies available to distribute to
their students. Staff can obtain the form through either method.

"Thank you for your cooperation in this matter."
