Hello. I’m Jay Mendell, professor of nonprofit management in the School of Public Administration .
My home phone is 954.755-8928. and my cell phone is 954.895-6364.
I have several e-mail addresses, but the easiest to remember is mendelljay@gmail.com.
If you send me e-mail, you must put “I am a student in PAD 4202” in the subject line, and it is a good idea to also give your name and phone numbers.
Don’t call my office, please; and don’t count on me to pick up anything you put in my mailbox.
Much of
what you will learn in here is not written down anywhere, at least not in a
well organized way. You will have to show up on time every time, and pay attention; and you well have to ask
questions, then go out and study the additional materials that I direct you to.
You can't be passive. By the way, if you are late or skip class or let your
attention wander, you are sure to miss something important. And that's your
tough luck.
I do not
try very hard to be well organized. I launch into stream of consciousness
lectures, and you get the point if you pay attention and ask questions, or you
don't. If you don't, that too is your tough luck.
Bad
things happen to people who do not follow my advice.
There are
deadlines for turning in projects, and if you miss a deadline, there is no way
to be sure what I will do with your late submission. Possibly I will accept it
with a penalty for lateness,
but possibly I will misplace it. The only way to be sure to get full credit is
to turn in your HW on time, with your name in the upper right of each sheet.
There are formats and instructions to follow, and if you fail to comply with directions, there is no way to be sure your paper will be recognized and credited to you. (I'll try to credit your work to you, but I won't try very hard.) Here’s a hint: write your last name in the upper right of every page you turn in.
"Skip" means arrive late, fail to arrive, or leave early.

Your grade will principally be based on how well you complete the weekly written
assignments and on the short quizzes that I will give whenever
I feel the urge (and I will feel the urge often). Your grade for a missed quiz
will, of course, be a zero.
I call absenteeism and tardiness "volunteering to fail."
If you come up to me and say, "I have got to skip class next week to [insert your lame excuse here]," and I reply, "Okay," this does not mean I have excused you. It just means I have decided fume politely and quietly. So, if you think that I have promised you an excused absence, get it in writing or it doesn’t count. I have never given a written excuse, by the way. (But I've only been a professor since 1973.

Research Using Databases
Prospect Research in the FAU Electronic Database This requires an Owl Card to activate EZproxy. Case Statements Here is an algorithm for locating case statements of an organizations in a particular field. Go to the Google advanced search page. For "with the exact phrase," enter "spotlight". For "return results from the site or domain," enter "http://www.fdncenter.org/". Then for "with at least one of the words," enter your subject area, such as "addiction" or "homelessness". You will need to experiment until this works for you. Following these instructions will let you find a large number of case statements. |

Here is an assignment due on 2006-09-05.
Go into Google and enter "foundation grant application". This will
point you to several grantmaking foundations. Download the application form from
one of these foundations, and turn it in as HW. You do not have to fill out the
application, but you do have to wirte your name in the upper right of each sheet
that you turn in.
It would be a very good idea to read the application form before you turn it in, to try to make sense of the questions. I may ask you to comment in class.

First, please note that there is a HW due on 2006-09-05.
Second here is a HW due on 2006-09-12.
In a lecture, I mentioned that the best database for finding grant opportunities
is the Foundation Center's database, and that the Junior League of Boca Raton
would allow you to use their FC database. There is a link on this Web page
to the Web page of the Junior League of Boca Raton. On a piece of paper, please
type the Internet address. Be sure to write your name in the upper right of
whatever you turn in.
There is more to this HW. I also mentioned that if you visit the Junior League, you should dress professionally. What comprises dressing professionally? Go to the Internet and find a short article on how to dress for a job interview. Don't write an essay: just turn in the article. Write your name in the upper right. Give me a gender appropriate article (no dresses for guys, etc.)

This HW is due on 2006-09-19.
My friend, Ms. Andi Thomas (http://hep-c-alert.org/founderstory.htm), asked me to give you this as a HW, because she needs your input. This is not a fundraising or grantwriting issue in itself, but more of an issue about how a nonprofit presents itself on the Web.
Ms. Thomas runs a nonprofit that serves the hepatitis community. Its Web page is http://hep-c-alert.org/.
Please explore http://hep-c-alert.org and send an e-mail to Ms. Thomas (andi@hep-c-alert.org). In between 200 and 400 words, tell her what are the strengths and weaknesses of her Web page, compared with other Web pages you have seen. Do be sure to point out what she needs more of and less of, because she is about to revise the Web page.
Actually send her the e-mail, and then print a copy for me. Be sure your name is on every page that you give me. Do not cc the e-mail to me. I want hard copy only.
