My teaching style

I do not try very hard to be well organized. I launch into stream of consciousness lectures, and you get the point if you pay attention and ask questions, or you don't. If you don't, that too is your tough luck.

You will have to show up on time every time, having studied in advance the material below, and pay attention; and you well have to ask questions, then go out and study the additional materials that I direct you to. You can't be passive. By the way, if you are late or skip class or let your attention wander, you are sure to miss something important. And that's your tough luck.

"Bad things happen to people who do not follow my advice." -- My mentor, Hayman Kite

How to reach me

Hello. I’m Jay Mendell, professor of nonprofit management in the School of
Public Administration. My home phone is 954.597-0574. and my cell phone is
954.895-6364.
I have several e-mail addresses, but the easiest to remember is mendelljay@gmail.com.
If you send me e-mail, you must put “I am a student in PAD 4202” in the subject line,
and it is a good idea to also give your name and phone numbers.
Don’t call my office, please; and don’t count on me to pick up anything you
put in my mailbox.

Grading

Your grade will principally be based on how well you complete the weekly written assignments and on the short quizzes that I will give whenever I feel the urge (and I will feel the urge often). Your grade for a missed quiz will, of course, be a zero.

There are deadlines for turning in projects, and if you miss a deadline, there is no way to be sure what I will do with your late submission. Possibly I will accept it with a penalty for lateness, but possibly I will misplace it. The only way to be sure to get full credit is to turn in your HW on time, with your name in the upper right of each sheet.

There are formats and instructions to follow, and if you fail to comply with directions, there is no way to be sure your paper will be recognized and credited to you. (I'll try to credit your work to you, but I won't try very hard.) Here’s a hint: write your last name in the upper right of every page you turn in.

I call absenteeism and tardiness "volunteering to fail."

Lame excuses

If you come up to me and say, "I have got to skip class next week to [insert your lame excuse here]," and I reply, "Okay," this does not mean I have excused you. It just means I have decided fume politely and quietly. So, if you think that I have promised you an excused absence, get it in writing or it doesn’t count. I have never given a written excuse, by the way. (But I've only been a professor since 1973.

Various ways to really annoy the professor (the guy who assigns your grade)

  1. Skip classes without offering a job-related reason.
  2. Repeatedly skip classes while repeatedly offering a personal reason you should have anticipated before you enrolled.
  3. Skip one of his classes to accommodate a less senior professor (any other professor at FAU).
  4. Turn in homework late.
  5. Turn in HW extra-late.
  6. Turn in HW late and then act surprised that the professor has misplaced it.
  7. Same as above except that the HW has been faxed or e-mailed (yes, even if it arrives before it is due).
  8. E-mail him a crucial inquiry under the epithet  "La-Dee-Da" and expect him to figure out you are "Lanny Dedario."
  9. Fail to retrieve the HW the evening the professor returns it and then act surprised that the professor has misplaced or trashed it.
  10. Leave the HW in a mailbox that the professor checks infrequently or does not even know exists (any mailbox in Jupiter).
  11. Fail to put your name on every single page you submit.
  12. Submit HW that is so vague that the professor cannot tell which assignment it is supposed to satisfy.
  13. Ask if you can have an "incomplete" until the next time the course is offered.

"Skip" means arrive late, fail to arrive, or leave early.

On Web updates and email.

Several times a week you will please have to check this Web page for additions and clarifications. Go the bottom and check for added notations.
To send me email, in the subject line type "I am a student in PAD grant writing."  And when you send me e-mail, be sure to include your name, not just your e-mail address. It is helpful if you include your phone numbers at home and work and your cell phone number.

Go to the archives of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel and find the article that says,

"Some federal grant money that normally goes for hurricane rebuilding will be used in Florida to help older homes stand up to storms. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced last week it would make $82.9 million available through the Community Development Block Grant program to help Florida -- especially South Florida -- strengthen older homes that were built when codes were weaker. Several state officials say enabling houses to withstand hurricane winds will solve the..."

Be aware that storms can produce high winds, heavy rains and flooding. All students and employees should monitor www.fau.edu, the FAU hotlines (561-297-2020, 561-799-8020, 954-236-1800 or 772-873-3330) and the local media for updates.

This HW is due on Saturday 30 September or Monday 2006-10-09.

You are going for a job interview, and you have been advised that your interviewer is “trendy” and interested in the best-selling books on business management. You do not have time to read lots of books, and anyway you do not have the money.

But you do want to appear to have a passing knowledge of recent best-selling business books. So, you go to http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_st/104-5119342-1866355?keywords=business&page=1&rh=n%3A1000%2Cn%3A3%2Ck%3Abusiness&sort=salesrank&x=14&y=8 , where you find a list of the top sellers among business books on Amazon.

Now you know the titles of the trendy books. So, go into Google and see if you can find a long excerpt and long review of one of the top ten sellers. By long, I mean at least 400 words.

Print the item. It is due at the start of class.

And by the way, ( this is for my Monday class) the laser printer will not be available before or during class.

Here is a list of questions proposed by Darold Powers. We will use this list in several classes.

What principles govern the system?

What are the essential features?

Does this have a natural lifespan? What external events might cause it to disappear?

Who has an interest in keeping this the same? Who has an interest in changing it?

What complaints have you heard about it?

What does this assume about human nature?

What small change might be made that would greatly affect the product or institution. What large change might be made that would barely affect the institution?

Is this fulfilling its original intent? At the time this was created, what alternatives were discarded? Might they be used today?

How does this affect living things besides humans?

What did this look like 25 years ago? If natural events take  their course, what will this institution look like in 25 years? What would have to change in the world for this to stay the same?
